At long last ... We have found the historic home we have been searching for. Welcome to "Idlewhile", built in 1905 atop Braddock Mountain (elevation 950 feet) in Braddock Heights, Maryland. Braddock Heights was founded in 1896 by George William Smith as a summer resort community for wealthy Washingtonians and Baltimoreans. The town eventually included several hotels, inns, boarding houses, a trolley line, a casino, a dance hall, a community pool, a wooden floor skating rink, an amusement park, scenic overlooks, nature trails, and even a small ski resort. Sadly, these have all disappeared with the passing of time. What remains ... Lovely eclectic homes (including Victorians, Queen Annes, Colonial Revivals, and Bungalows) that line the mountain ridge and have scenic views of Frederick and the Monocacy and Middletown valleys.

Our new home transports you to another time and place with a large wraparound porch, original woodwork, formal dining room with stunning wallpapers, a charming cottage kitchen, sun filled garden room, claw foot tubs, four spacious bedrooms and a dressing room. “Idlewhile” was honored as the first home in Braddock Heights to be registered with the Frederick County Landmark Foundation. Karen and Leah, along with numerous fairies and dragonflies will oversee amazing Victorian gardens that include a koi pond, grape arbor, walk ways, and lovely trees, flowers, shrubs, and other plants. The back yard includes the original carriage house and backs up to Braddock Heights Park and the community swimming pool.

The historical and community charm found in Braddock Heights are so often absent from most homes and neighborhoods today. We look forward to being a part of the community and continuing to update and preserve the property. I plan to update this blog with pictures, history, new friends, community happenings, area attractions, and our “comings and goings”. In the meantime, take a look through the pictures below to get a feel for this special place.

P.S. We sold our home in Columbia in a record setting seven days! The move to “Idlewhile” is set to start on October 1st.
